Through our collective efforts, CEJILA aims to address issues faced by care experienced and justice impacted lawyers through providing:

Advocacy for Diversity

CEJILA promotes affirmative practices that value diverse perspectives, including those affected by child protection and criminal justice systems.

Support and Networking

CEJILA offers a secure and confidential environment for members to share experiences, discuss challenges, and promote inclusivity within the legal field.

Mentoring and Role Models

By highlighting care experienced and justice impacted lawyers, CEJILA aims to inspire others facing adversity to pursue legal careers.

Pathways and Development

CEJILA seeks to support and mentor youth with criminal justice and/or statutory intervention exposure in their pursuit of legal careers.

Research and Advocacy

CEJILA conducts research on socio-economic diversity within the legal profession and advocates for inclusive policies.

Consultancy and Mentorship

CEJILA provides consultancy and mentorship to enhance diversity in the legal sector and support aspiring lawyers with similar life experiences.

Our Values

CEJILA recognises that first nations children and adults are, and have always been, disproportionately impacted bya the child protection and justice system, and values the unique perspectives their membership brings to CEJILA. 

CEJILA values all forms of diversity, recognising that CEJILs may also have additionally experienced diversity and adversity because of their race, culture, religion, disability/neurodivergency, sex, sexuality and/or gender (or a combination of these) and values the unique perspectives their membership brings to CEJILA. 

CEJILA respects the privacy of all its members and does not require any member to share the details of their personal story, within the group or publicly.

CEJILA leadership is informed by a Steering Committee of elected CELs, CLLs and JILs.

Above all, CEJILA is a safe space for CEJIL’s to speak their truth, in their own language, and in their own time.
